Rare Monitor Type Antique Steamer Trunk
with Wood Exposed and Beautiful Brass Accents

This is a very hard to find Monitor type steamer trunk (commonly called a 'Waterfall Trunk). This trunk is especially unique as most of the original metal covering has been removed to expose the wonderful wood. Wood of this age is hard to describe as it is over 100 years old. You have to see it to really appreciate the depth of color in it, but I think the pictures capture quite a bit of it. You might never see another one of these, as the work to make it look like this requires so much labor and time. First there are hundreds, yes, HUNDREDS of nails that have to be removed to get the old metal, slats, attachments, drawbolts, and additional hardware off. What you have left is a wood box and lid. Then, you refinish the components; replace metal as desired, and all the slats, attachments, drawbolts, and additional hardware back to the trunk. We added some brass corner clamps, and used brass nails. Then we added touches of gold antique paint. The Brass accents and gold antique tones make this an Outstanding Trunk. The lock mechanism is original but unfortunately we do not have the key. The left side drawbolt is missing the catch for the bail, but its otherwise intact, and relative un-noticeable. We chose to leave it with the trunk as they were original, unique, and had decorative lid lifts (see photos). The trunk has been refinished and has been stained in the rich color of "Special Walnut" on the body to a low luster, and “Golden Oak” on the slats to a semi high luster with high quality Minwax . The trunk interior has been sanded and treated with high quality orange Oil Beeswax to give it a beauty of color. We had to replace the leather handles with new reproduction handles. This trunk now is ready to take on another 100 years and be a wonderful addition to your unique antiques.
